Notice Summary
NI CER-2024F-4X and NI CES-2024F-4X switch models can fail and become unusable.
Background
A component within the power regulation subsystem can overheat and fail, causing the switch to become unusable.
Impact
Only the Fiber versions of CES and CER are at risk to this specific component overheating condition. Copper versions are not at risk as their power circuitry is different.

The number of failures observed in the field have been very low. The number of total failures, counting all reasons including this specific failure, are well below the predicted failure rate for this HW platform.

NI CES-2024F-4X, PCA revision 40-1000102-11 and earlier

Symptoms
Switch will power down and become unusable.
The switch may power down due to a detected thermal event or it may power down due to loss of an internal voltage. There may not be any log recorded ahead of the power down.
Workaround
To see if you are affected, use the show version command. In the example below, the PCA version shows this unit is affected and the software version shows that it has been properly upgraded:

Solution
A SW solution to increase the nominal fan speed to ensure sufficient airflow over the circuitry to prevent any overheating of the specific component has been developed.

Upgrading to one of the specified firmware versions or any higher version of the NetIron OS will provide an increased fan speed and airflow to prevent any overheating. With this change, the nominal power consumption of the switch will be increased by less than 20W, and the maximum power consumption is not affected.
