Objective
How to regain CLI access using a backdoor password on ERS switches when password is expired or misplaced/forgotten
Environment
  • ERS 3000
  • ERS 4000
  • ERS 5000
  • All supported releases
Procedure
  • WARNING: Password MUST be entered within 60 seconds of the switch completing it's reboot cycle!
  • Below are instructions on how to regain CLI access via Telnet or Serial that have been set to local password authentication
  • This method will keep the current configuration intact. Once a user regains access to the CLI the existing password in the user profiles can be modified
  1. Obtain MAC address of impacted switch or base unit of impacted stack
    • MAC address located on sticker on back of switch
    • MAC address stored in show tech (if copy saved)
  2. Contact GTAC with MAC address so GTAC engineer can generate backdoor password
  3. Establish serial console access to impacted switch or base unit of impacted stack
  4. Cold boot the unit/stack
  5. Press CTRL+Y when logo screen displayed following reboot

  1. Leave Username field blank and press DOWN ARROW key to move to Password field (do not press ENTER)
  2. Enter backdoor password provided by GTAC in password field
  3. Press ENTER to gain access to the CLI
Additional notes

When creating a username and password for the ERS 3500 series, the password MUST have at least one (1) special character. 
Failing to do so will NOT present an error; however, the password will not work next time you attempt to login using your newly created username.

1. Type enable
2. Type configure terminal
3. Type username [username] [rw | ro]
4. [enter password]
5. [confirm password]
6. Type save config
7. Type exit
8. Type exit
9. Login using new account
