TitleERS/VSP Stackables: How To Backup Switch Configuration and Upgrade/Downgrade Switch Software From ACLI
Objective
How To Backup Switch Configuration and Upgrade/Downgrade Switch Software From ACLI on ERS/VSP Stackables
Environment
  • Ethernet Routing Switch all platforms
  • Virtual Services Platform 7000
  • Any supported software version
Procedure

For upgrading/downgrading a switch, firmware, secure and non-secure images for software can be downloaded from https://support.avaya.com.

Backup binary and ASCII configuration using below commands:

NOTE: To backup-restore configuration, TFTP or USB can be used. (USB option is available for ERS 5000 series only)

Commands to Copy (Backup) configuration using TFTP in both ASCII and Binary format :

  • BINARY FORMAT

copy config tftp [filename ] address {A.B.C.D | } filename (binary configuration is encrypted and it doesn't get corrupted easily).

  • ASCII FORMAT

copy running-config tftp filename address {A.B.C.D | }

Commands to Restore configuration using TFTP in both ASCII and Binary format:

Use below command to restore from binary and ASCII format file:

copy tftp config [filename ] [address {A.B.C.D | } [filename ]] unit {<1-8> | all}

Command to backup configuration in ASCII format using USB:

copy running-config usb filename (works only for ERS 5000 series)

Command to backup configuration in binary format using USB:

copy config usb filename (works only for ERS 5000 series)

Command to restore configuration using USB:

copy usb config filename (works only for ERS 5000 series)

NOTE: If any error is seen while copying config files, add '.cfg' after the filename.

Software/Firmware Upgrade Procedure:

Perform the following procedure to change the software version that runs on the switch with ACLI:

  • Access ACLI through the Telnet/SSH protocol or through a Console connection.
  • From the command prompt, use the download command with the following.

Parameters to change the software version:

download [{tftp | sftp} address { | }]  | usb [unit] diag | image | image-if-newer | poe_module_image } [username [password] [no-reset]

  • Press Enter.

The software download occurs automatically without user intervention. This process deletes the contents of the FLASH memory and replaces it with the desired software image.

Do not interrupt the download or power off the unit during the download process. Depending on network conditions, this process may take up to 8 minutes if performing an agent code update in a large stack configuration.

When the download is complete, the switch automatically resets unless end-user used the no-reset parameter. The software image initiates a self-test and returns a message when the process is complete.

Important: During the download process, the management functionality of the switch is locked to prevent configuration changes or other downloads. Normal switching operations will continue to function while the download is in progress.

  • Command to verify the software and firmware version used by the switch during the next boot:  "show boot"

#show boot
Unit Agent Image Active Image Diag Image Active Diag
----- ----------- ------------ ---------- -----------
1* 5.6.0.009 5.6.0.008 5.3.0.3 5.3.0.3
* - Unit requires reboot for new Active Image to be made operational.
# - Unit requires reboot for new Diag to be made operational.

  • Reboot to install the newer image.

#boot
Reboot the unit(s) (y/n) ? y

Rebooting . . .

  • Ideally it takes 3 to 5 minutes for the switch to complete the reboot process.
