TitleHow to change the power supplies, fans, and the designated airflow direction in a VDX chassis from the original configuration
Objective
To change the chassis airflow direction whilst exchanging the PSU and fans for ones that support the opposite direction for example portside intake to portside exhaust. The parts are FRU but the chassis needs to be told the direction has changed.
Environment
  • Extreme Switching
  • Network OS
  • VDX Series
Procedure
  1. Ensure the chassis orientation is in the proper airflow direction.
  2. Connect a console to the switch
  3. Plug in the power supplies
  4. Once the switch is booted completely, log in to the switch
  5. Change the chassis airflow direction:
sw0# chassis fan airflow-direction port-side-exhaust

You will see the following messages.
Previous configuration : port-side-intake

Current configuration : port-side-exhaust

System fan airflow-direction changes will be effective after reboot!!
  1. Power-off your switch and replace the power supplies and fans.
  2. At this point you need to verify that the chassis is oriented in the proper airflow direction for the new power supplies and fans
  3. Reconnect power to the power supplies and wait for the system to boot completely.
  4. Verify the power supplies and fans match the chassis airflow direction.
