Objective
To be able to get IPFix records send to Netsight to see reporting from Application Flows tab.
Environment
  • Netsight Oneview
  • Purview
  • IPFIX supported EXOS switches
Note: Check the EXOS Release Notes to see if your switch supports IPFIX.
Procedure
1. First, we must enable IPFIX configuration on the switches.
    Here is a sample configuration
 
enable ip-fix
configure ip-fix domain 1
configure ip-fix ip-address 1.2.3.4 protocol udp L4-port 2075 vr "VR-Default"
configure ip-fix source ip-address 1.2.3.1 vr "VR-Default"
enable ip-fix ports 23 all_traffic
configure ip-fix ports 23 ingress-and-egress

2. Next, you must be using Netsight 6.2 or higher. The IP address 1.2.3.4 is the Netsight Server/Appliance IP. If Purview is used (version 6.3 or higher) then this can be directed to the Purview appliance instead.
3. Open Oneview and navigate to the Applications tab.

Explanation for the commands:
enable ip-fix
This command enables the ip-fix protocol globally in the switch. This should be done irrespective of enabling the ip-fix on a particular port.
configure ip-fix domain 1
Domain simply put is a reference point for the flow records sent by the switch so that the collector can correlate the records.
Snippet from the user guide: "Observation points are aggregated into observation domains. The entire switch operates as one domain. The IPFIX protocol contains an observation domain ID in the flow records that are sent to the collector. The collector can use the domain to correlate records to their origin."
configure ip-fix ip-address 1.2.3.4 protocol udp L4-port 2075 vr "VR-Default"
This is the command to configure the collector which in this case would be Netsight server. We also have the option to configure the protocol (TCP/UDP) to be used along with the destination port. Definition of VR is important depending on the connectivity from the switch to the netsight server. If it is via vr-mgmt, we need to specify it explicitly.
configure ip-fix source ip-address 1.2.3.1 vr "VR-Default"
This is the IP address configured in the switch using which the flow records would be sent to the collector.
enable ip-fix ports 23 all_traffic
This is the configuration which enables the ip-fix protocol on specific ports in which the flow needs to be analyzed.
configure ip-fix ports 23 ingress-and-egress
This command is to specify the direction required for flow sampling on the port.

Adding more ports to the configuration do not affect the switch performance as long as they are within the limits of simultaneous flows mentioned below in the release notes.
