Objective
To turn a WiNG AP into a virtual controller for AP adoption and management.
Environment
  • AP65xx series
  • AP75xx series
  • AP8533
  • AP8432
  • AP71xx
  • AP8232
  • AP8132
  • WiNG 5.x Enterprise and Swift UI
  • WiNG 5.x Express
Procedure
Prerequisites:
  • Compatible browser (Chrome, Firefox)
  • SSH (Secure Shell) client such as PuTTy.exe or similar
Procedure:
  1. Enterprise UI:
    1. Log into the AP via Web UI
    2. Go to Configuration > Devices > Virtual Controller
    3. From the table select the AP and press the Edit button (bottom right hand corner of page)
    4. On the Virtual Controller page, check the box to the right of Set as Virtual Controller AP
    5. Click OK
    6. Click Commit and Save

  1. CLI (Command Line Interface):
    1. Log into the AP and run the following commands:

#virtual-controller

  1. To remove this setting:

#no virtual controller

  1. Enterprise APs with Swift UI:
    1. Log into the AP from Web UI
    2. Under Configuration, go the Basic and check the Virtual Controller box.
    3. Click on apply to save.

  1. CLI:
    1. ​Follow instructions outlined in section B
  2.  Express APs:
    1. Follow instructions outlined in section C (Express APs can only be configured from the Web UI. Configuration from CLI is restricted unless they have been upgraded to firmware 5.9.2.x or higher. Check release notes for APs supported in 5.9.2.x)
