TitleDelay in the multicast traffic while a new stream is received in a PIM Sparse mode enabled network
Question
Is it an expected behaviour to see a slight delay in the multicast traffic for the first time in a PIM sparse mode enabled network?
Environment
  • EXOS All
  • Summit and Blackdiamond Series
Answer
In a PIM Sparse mode network, there is no initial flooding of the stream.
So, when a new receiver requests a multicast traffic, we could observe a slight delay while the PIM cache is being created in the switches. If the cache is already present, then there will not be any delay.

Sample cache output:

X460-24x.10 # sh pim cache 239.250.10.100
Index Dest Group Source InVlan Origin
[0001] 239.250.10.100 198.51.1.100 (S) CCTV Sparse
Expires after 186 secs UpstNbr: 0.0.0.0
RP: 198.51.2.1 via 198.51.2.1 in C2_E1S2
EgressIfList = C2_E1S2(155)(FW)(SM)(S)
