This knowledge base article outlines how to change the root password for the NOS operating system. The default password is well known, and if the root account is enabled, it is a compromise of security. It is recommended to change the default password of the root account.

There are 2 ways to change the password via root.

1. Run the command "passwd root" in the root shell.


Log in to the switch as root:
RB1_6720 login: root
Password: fibranne


Change the password:

RB1_6720:root> passwd root

Changing password for root
Enter old password: fibranne
Enter new password: extreme1
Re-type new password: extreme1


Test the change. --Log out, and log back in to the switch.

RB1_6720:root> logout
Connection closed by foreign host.


Log in to the switch as root: --This is to verify the configuration has taken place.
RB1_6720 login: root
Password: extreme1



2. Change the password at the beginning of the root prompt.
This will work if the password is set up as "fibranne", and the account password has never been changed.

Log in to the switch as root:
RB1_6720 login: root
Password:
fibranne

NOS Will See Default Password "fibranne" and Prompt for Password Change:

Please change passwords for switch default accounts now.
Use Control-C to exit or press 'Enter' key to proceed.

Changing default password for "root"
Warning: Access to the Root account may be required for complete access of the switch. Please ensure the Root password is documented in a secure location. Recovery of a lost Root password will result in downtime.

Changing password for root
Enter new password: extreme1
Re-type new password: extreme1
passwd: all authentication tokens updated successfully



Test the change. --Log out, and log back in to the switch.

RB1_6720:root> logout
Connection closed by foreign host.

Password: extreme1
