TitleWhat is syntax for DHCP option 191 allowing WING devices to automatically adopt?
Question
What is correct syntax of DHCP option 191?
Environment
  • All Summit WM3000 Series Controllers
  • ExtremeWiNG Controllers
  • WirelessWiNG Controllers
  • ExtremeWiNG Access Points
  • WirelessWiNG Acess Points
  • WiNG 5.5+ Software
  • DHCP server
Answer
The DHCP option 191 is specific in pointing AP to its adopter and setting correct MINT link level

One of the most important things is to make sure DHCP option 191 syntax is correct, including commas, semicolons etc.
Below is an example of option 191 string that is pushed to the Access Point at remote site with 2 controller entries:

pool1=<primary-controller-ip-hostname>,<secondary-controller-ip-hostname>;level=<1|2>

If APs are already present in network you have to follow article How do I force WiNG APs to pull DHCP option 191 changes?

Once AP gets updated DHCP info, you can confirm correctness with below command

VX# show ip dhcp-vendor-options on AP/7532
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
               ITEM                          VALUE                INTERFACE
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  Server Info                      n/a                         vlan88
  Firmware Image File              n/a                         vlan88
  Config File                      n/a                         vlan88
  Legacy Adoption Info             n/a                         n/a
  AP Adoption Info                 pool1=192.168.7.205         vlan88
  AP Adoption Info                 level=2                     vlan88
  Controller Adoption Info         n/a                         n/a
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Full example for WiNG based DHCP server is below:

VX(config-dhcp-policy-DHCP)#
 dhcp-server-policy DHCP
  option AP-adoption 191 ascii

 dhcp-pool AP
  option AP-adoption pool1=192.168.7.205;level=2
  <omitted>
