TitleWhat is the benefit of using a ring topology in a stack?
Question
What is the benefit of using a ring topology in a stack?
Environment
  • EXOS
  • SummitStack
Answer
Using a ring topology provides redundancy in case of a failure of one of the stacking links. In normal operation, one of the stack ports is blocked; if a failure is detected, the blocked port is opened.
Additional notes
Blocking on a stack port only applies to broadcast, multicast, and unknown unicast (flood) traffic.  Known unicast traffic can transit the blocked stack port.
