Question
  1. What is the difference in putting an IP address on a port or a VLAN for 200 Series with examples.
Environment
  • 200-Series
  • All firmware versions
Answer
  • The difference in putting an IP address on a port  VS a VLAN
    • The argument unit-slot-port corresponds to a physical routing interface or VLAN routing interface ,and the keyword vlan is used to specify the VLAN ID of the routing VLAN directly instead of in a unit-slot-port format, and when configuring IP address on a port you can also configure one or more secondary IP addresses on the interface as well as configure the relay of certain UDP broadcast packets received on a specific to a given port number or to specify multiple port numbers and where relay DHCP packets could be configured to a certain server.
  • If layer 3 is expected to be used, the following will enable routing globally on the switch.
    • (router) >enable
    • (router)# configure
    • (router)(Routing)(Config)#ip routing     <- this command enables IPv4 routing globally
    • (router)(Routing)(Config)#exit              <- exit from the configuration mode
  • Example of placing an IP address on a VLAN
    • (router)#vlan database
    • (router)(Routing)#vlan routing <Vlan ID>
    • (router)(Routing)#configure
    • (router)(Routing)(Config)#interface vlan <Vlan ID>
    • (router)(Routing)(Config)#ip address <ip-addr> <mask>
    • (router)(Routing)(Config)#write memory
  • Example of placing an IP address on a port
    • (router) #config
    • (router) (Config)#interface 0/4/1
    • (router) (Interface 0/4/1)#ip address <ip-addr> <mask>
