TitleWhat is the impact on OSPF when trial license is migrated to Advanced Edge?
Question
What is the impact on OSPF when trial license is migrated to Advanced Edge?
Environment
  • EXOS All
  • Summit x670
Answer

If we enable core license before disabling trial license, OSPF neighbor configuration will not be affected.  The problem may occur only if the current license is migrated from core or core comparable license to an advanced edge license.

License limitation for OSPF:  Advanced Edge license supports 4 maximum active interfaces with non-DR capability vs Core license doesn’t have any restriction on the number of active OSPF interfaces.

Migration Testing from Trial License to Advanced Edge.

1.        5 active OSPF interface with Trial license

X670V-48x.6 # show license
Enabled License Level:
30 days Trial - expires in 30 days
X670V-48x.7 #
X670V-48x.7 #
X670V-48x.7 # show ospf interfaces
VLAN      IP Address         AREA ID         Flags      Cost State   Neighbors
v1         10.10.1.1      /24 0.0.0.0         -rif--       2/A DR        0
v2         10.10.2.1      /24 0.0.0.0         -rif--       2/A DR        0
v3         10.10.3.1      /24 0.0.0.0         -rif--       2/A DR        0
v4         10.10.4.1      /24 0.0.0.0         -rif--       2/A DR        0
v5         10.10.5.1      /24 0.0.0.0         -rif--       2/A DR        0

Flags:  D - Duplicate address detected on VLAN,
f - Interface Forwarding Enabled, i - Interface OSPF Enabled,
        n - Multinetted VLAN, p - Passive Interface,
        r - Router OSPF Enable, T - Tentative address.
Cost:   A - Automatic Cost, C - Configured Cost.

Total number of interfaces: 5

2.        Disable Trial license and revert back to original license (Advanced Edge in X670)
(debug) X670V-48x.12 # debug epm clear trial-license
Are you sure you want to clear license information stored in EEPROM? (y/N) Yes

A reboot is required before the clear license takes effect.

(debug) X670V-48x.13 # show license
Enabled License Level:
        Advanced Edge
Enabled Feature Packs:
        None
3.        5 OSPF interfaces are still active as DR.
(debug) X670V-48x.14 # show ospf interfaces
VLAN      IP Address         AREA ID         Flags      Cost State   Neighbors
v1         10.10.1.1      /24 0.0.0.0         -rif--       2/A DR        0
v2         10.10.2.1      /24 0.0.0.0         -rif--       2/A DR        0
v3         10.10.3.1      /24 0.0.0.0         -rif--       2/A DR        0
v4         10.10.4.1      /24 0.0.0.0         -rif--       2/A DR        0
v5         10.10.5.1      /24 0.0.0.0         -rif--       2/A DR        0

4.        Disable/Enable OSPF and then check OSPF interfaces
(debug) X670V-48x.15 # disable ospf
* (debug) X670V-48x.16 # enable ospf
* (debug) X670V-48x.18 # show ospf interfaces
VLAN      IP Address         AREA ID         Flags      Cost State   Neighbors
v1         10.10.1.1      /24 0.0.0.0         -rif--       2/A DR        0
v2         10.10.2.1      /24 0.0.0.0         -rif--       2/A DR        0
v3         10.10.3.1      /24 0.0.0.0         -rif--       2/A DR        0
v4         10.10.4.1      /24 0.0.0.0         -rif--       2/A DR        0
v5         10.10.5.1      /24 0.0.0.0         -rif--       2/A DR        0

5.        Restart OSPF process. Advanced license makes only 4 active interface with ODR capability (interface priority as 0).
* (debug) X670V-48x.18 # restart process ospf
Do you want to save configuration changes to currently selected configuration
file (primary.cfg)? (y or n) Yes
Saving configuration on master ..... done!
Step 1: terminating process ospf gracefully ...
Step 2: starting process ospf ...
Restarted process ospf successfully
(debug) X670V-48x.23 # show ospf interfaces
VLAN      IP Address         AREA ID         Flags      Cost State   Neighbors
v1         10.10.1.1      /24 0.0.0.0         -rif--       2/A ODR       0
v2         10.10.2.1      /24 0.0.0.0         -rif--       2/A ODR       0
v3         10.10.3.1      /24 0.0.0.0         -rif--       2/A ODR       0
v4         10.10.4.1      /24 0.0.0.0         -rif--       2/A ODR       0
v5         10.10.5.1      /24 0.0.0.0         -r-f--       2/A DOWN      0

6.        Comparison between run-time data and configuration data for OSPF interface. Configuration still keeps original data until you save data.

Run-time Data
(debug) X670V-48x.24 # show ospf interface v1
Interface(rif1000007): 10.10.1.1/24 Vlan: v1 Ospf: ENABLED Router: ENABLED
AreaId: 0.0.0.0  RtId: 10.10.1.1  Link Type: broadcast(auto)  Passive: No
Cost: 2/A  Priority: 0  Transit Delay: 1  DAD State:Valid
Hello Interval: 10s  Rtr Dead Time: 40s  Retransmit Interval: 5s
Wait Timer: 40s
Authentication: NONE
State: ODR   Number of events: 1
DR RtId: 0.0.0.0  DR IP addr: 0.0.0.0  BDR IP addr: 0.0.0.0
Num Neighbor State Change to FULL : 0

Configured Data
(debug) X670V-48x.26 # show config ospf detail | inc v1
configure ospf add vlan v1 area 0.0.0.0 link-type broadcast
configure ospf vlan v1 cost automatic
configure ospf vlan v1 priority 1
configure ospf vlan v1 authentication none
configure ospf vlan v1 timer 5 1 10 40 40
configure ospf vlan v1 restart-helper none
enable ospf vlan v1 restart-helper-lsa-check

7.        After saving data, OSPF configuration is updated with priority 0.   Saving configuration command after license is effective can lead into losing OSPF priority information.
(debug) X670V-48x.27 # save
The configuration file primary.cfg already exists.
Do you want to save configuration to primary.cfg and overwrite it? (y/N) Yes
Saving configuration on master ..... done!
Configuration saved to primary.cfg successfully.

(debug) X670V-48x.28 # show config ospf detail | inc v1
configure ospf add vlan v1 area 0.0.0.0 link-type broadcast
configure ospf vlan v1 cost automatic
configure ospf vlan v1 priority 0
configure ospf vlan v1 authentication none
configure ospf vlan v1 timer 5 1 10 40 40
configure ospf vlan v1 restart-helper none
enable ospf vlan v1 restart-helper-lsa-check

Conclusion:  Backing up configuration before migration of license would be best practice recommendation.  If you migrate from trial license to core license (enable core license before disabling trial license), as long as feature set license (MPLS/OPENFLOW) is not used, you will not lose configuration for core license functionalities.    However, if you migrate from trial license to advanced edge, some of configuration (OSPF/PIM) may be lost after reboot or restart process.
