Titlewhat's the different from "show log" and "show log message nvram"
Question
what's the different from "show log" and "show log message nvram"? Why GTAC ask for both when troubleshooting?
Environment
  • Summit
  • EXOS
Answer
The default, NVRAM log buffer only stores high level alarms  "Warning" through "Critical", memory buffer (show log) stores all messages.("Debug-Data" through "Critical")

Based on that, messages like “Info” and “Notice” would appear only when using “show log”.

Additional notes
To display the current log configuration of the targets, use the following command:
* L11-U30.2 # show log configuration target memory-buffer
Log Target       : memory-buffer
    Enabled      : yes
    Filter Name  : DefaultFilter
    Match regex  : Any
    Severity     : Debug-Data (through Critical)
    Format       : MM/DD/YYYY HH:MM:SS.hh <Severity:Component.SubComponent.Condition>
    Buffer size  : 1000 messages
    Percent Full : 14%
    Full Alert   : None

* L11-U30.3 # show log configuration target nvram
Log Target       : nvram
    Enabled      : yes
    Filter Name  : DefaultFilter
    Match regex  : Any
    Severity     : Warning (through Critical)
    Format       : MM/DD/YYYY HH:MM:SS.hh <Severity:Component.SubComponent.Condition>

To configure a target, you use specific commands for severity use the following command:

configure log target nvram | memory-buffer severity <severity>

For information about log severities map to the numerical severity see the article How do EXOS log severities map to the numerical severity in syslog messages?
