TitleWLAN 9100: Unable To Upgrade the Wireless Access Point-"Software image license check failed"
Symptoms

Wireless Access Point 9133 running 7.0.1 software version.

Upgrading WLAN 9100 access points directly from 7.0.1 to 7.2.4 software version fails with an error message "Software image license check failed".

Environment
Cause

Issue is due to improper implementation of recommended procedures.

Resolution

Upgrading AP image version from 7.0 to 7.2.4 requires a step upgrade to 7.0.7 as there are some licensing changes internal to the software.

Below are the different Upgrade procedures for Access Point.

From Wireless Orchestration System (WOS):
Locate the "AP Upgrade" through Configure -> AP Upgrades -> Perform or Schedule Upgrade.
Select the access points to be upgraded and hit “Next” to choose an upgrade source.
On the next page select the System Software. Choose a file, hit “Next” and then “Upgrade”.
WOS will continue to push the file out to the access point (if using SCP) or instruct the access point to download the file if using an external FTP or HTTP server and then proceed to reboot the access points.

From Array WMI (Web Management Interface):
Login to the access points WMI and locate “System Tools”.
Next locate “Software Upgrade” and hit “Choose File” and browse to the software image file - hit “Upgrade”:
Once the file is uploaded, following message appears "Software successfully upgraded to aos-x.x.x-xxxx.bin"
To finalize the upgrade, reboot the access point to boot up on the new software version.

From Access Point Command Line Interface (CLI):
Upgrade access point OS software from the Command Line using the built in FTP or TFTP client.
Save the AP OS to the TFTP/FTP server root directory that is accessible to the access point:
Transfer the new image onto the access point using the following commands

TFTP
A-9132(config)# file
A-9132(config-file)# tftp host <tftp ip address> get aos-x.x.x-xxxx.bin

FTP
A-9132(config)# file
A-9132(config-file)# ftp host <ftp ip/hostname > user support password ******* get aos-x.x.x-xxxx.bin

After the FTP/TFTP transfer is complete set the Active-Image using the "active-image" command
A-9132(config-file)# active-image aos-x.x.x-xxxx.bin
To finalize the upgrade, reboot the access point to boot up on the new software version.

Procedure to perform upgrade of  Wireless Orchestration System (WOS):
Login to WOS and navigate to Settings > Upgrade (under maintenance) > Perform Upgrade > Choose File to be Uploaded > Click Upgrade to install the new software. When the process is complete, a pop-up message will be displayed. It will inform you that you must reboot the Appliance. Click the OK button to close it and reboot the server.

To check whether the AP has been Upgraded to the Latest Version. Please run the below commands on the Access-Point via CLI.

AP1# show boot-image ---------------------> It will show the Active and Backup image file for the AP.

NOTE:Refer through release notes of 7.2.4 downloads.avaya.com/css/P8/documents/101006307 which mentions this point “Note: Access Points are required to be upgraded to Rel 7.0.7 or later image prior to upgrading to Rel 7.2.4”.
