Information

TitleConsole Connection Details
Symptoms

Switch not displaying text or displaying 'scrambled' characters and symbols.

Environment
ERS 3000 / 4000 / 5000 running any supported software
Cause
  • Incorrect / bad console cable or console settings
  • Switch hardware defect
Resolution

Switch uses a standard 9 pin DB9/DE9 connector with the following pinouts:

Pin - Signal
----------------------------------------
1 - Carrier Detect (Not Used)
2 - Transmit Data (TXD)
3 - Receive Data (RXD)
4 - Data Terminal Ready (Not Used)
5 - Signal ground (GND)
6 - Not used
7 - Request to send (not used)
8 - Not used
9 - Ring indicator (not used)
----------------------------------------

The above pinout would mean that you would have to use a “straight through” cable to communicate between a PC and the console port. A “null modem” cable will not work with this.

The 4500 factory default for terminal emulation is:
5 - Signal ground (GND)
6 - Not used
7 - Request to send (not used)
8 - Not used
9 - Ring indicator (not used)

Baud Rate: 9600 bps
Data Bits: 8
Stop Bits: 1
Parity: None
Flow Control: None
