Symptoms
  • Attempting to use make_disk.bat to format and re-image a USB storage device fails with the error:
ERROR: The specified drive is not formatted as FAT32. Please reformat it and try again.
  • The drive was formatted as FAT32.

Cause
On non-US / non-English regionalized Windows system the output of fsutil called by the make_disk.bat batch script may not match.
Resolution
  1. Run the output of fsutil to determine the language string for "File System Name" as shown below:
D:\>fsutil fsinfo volumeinfo d:
Volume Name : STORAGE1
Volume Serial Number : 0x4064c186
Max Component Length : 255
File System Name : NTFS
Is ReadWrite
  1. Modify the make_disk.bat file to match the appropriate string, replacing references to 'findstr "File System Name"' with the equivalent regionalized string.
