APs do not create backup tunnel to other controller

« Go Back

Information

TitleAPs do not create backup tunnel to other controller
Symptoms
  • APs do not create a backup tunnel to the other controller.
  • APs do not form a backup tunnel to the other controller.
  • APs do not form a backup tunnel to the foreign controller.
  • Backup controller ignores AP registration requests.
Environment
  • ExtremeWireless Appliances and Access Points
  • Identifi
  • All firmware
Cause
  • APs are in a different subnet than esa0 (port with AP Registration enabled). Controller does not have path back to the AP, so it ignores the Registration Requests.
  • APs may not have the correct Wireless Search IPs in their authorization list.  This is shown under the AP Static Configuration Tab in the GUI.
Resolution
  • Add default route to controller:
    • GUI:
  • Controller -> Network -> Routing Protocols -> New

    Destination Address: 0.0.0.0
    Subnet Mask: 0.0.0.0
    Gateway: [gateway-ip-address]
    Override dynamic routes enabled
    • CLI:
  • EWC.enterasys.com# ip
    EWC.enterasys.com:ip# route default [gateway-ip-address]
    EWC.enterasys.com:ip# apply
  • Alternately, AP Registration must also be checked on the backup controller's management topology for AP Tunnels to form.
  • Place the ExtremeWireless appliance IP address in the Wireless Controller Search List options.  Make sure it is the IP address that handles the AP Registration.
  • Enter the AP's primary IP (where the Access Point is configured) first, then enter the Secondary (Backup) IP address.
  • Try to set down the AP MTU to 1400 or possibly lower to see if fragmentation is an issue from AP to backup controller.
Additional notes
Logs have messages similar to:

Wireless AP registration and/or authentication failed. (AP SN 15024086085B0000 AP IP 10.60.8.35 (backup tunnel))
