Information

TitleC5210 repeated clients re-authentication attempts after the upgrade of the ExtremeWireless appliance and XMC; end device clients with Intel AC8265 NICs
Symptoms
  • Continual reauthentications from end devices with Intel NICs, and Windows 10 version 1809.
  • Intel AC8265 client card sometimes fail to authenticate with AP (11r & MFP enabled).
Environment
  • ExtremeWireless appliances
  • ExtremeWireless Access Points.
  • Firmware 10.41.13.0008
  • Clients end devices with Intel AC8265 NICs.
  • Windows 10 version 1809.
  • WLAN configured with 11R (Fast Transition) and MFP (Management Frame Protection) enabled.
Cause
  • This is a Microsoft Windows 10 supplicant (Win Zero) issue.
  • When it happens:
    • AP will reject the message 2 of the 4-way handshake and hostapd debug log will log the reason.
    • Wireless trace will show that the wireless client has inserted 2 zero bytes in the RSN IE shifting the location of the PMKID in M2 of the 4-way handshake. Different from what’s sent in assoc request.

Resolution
  • This issue will be fixed in Windows 10 – 19H1 release. The fix is already available for Win Insider Build 18329.
  • The workaround is to disable 11R (Fast Transition) and MFP (Management Frame Protection).
