TitleCommon Issues: Unable to connect to NetSight Server Error
Client errors out with "Unable to connect to NetSight server"
NetSight Suite
The general cause for this error is a lack of connectivity between the client and the NetSight server service.
Firewall Considerations:
Verify if there is a firewall between remote client and NetSight server, and if so the firewall is allowing the correct ports.
  • The NetSight Server runs on a set of non-standard ports. These TCP ports (4530-4533) must be accessible through firewalls for clients to connect to the server.
    4530/4531 -- JNP (JNDI)
    4532 -- JRMP (RMI)
    4533 -- UIL (JMS)
  • Port 8080 (Default HTTP traffic) must be accessible through firewalls for users to install and launch NetSight client applications.
  • Port 8443 (Default HTTPS traffic) must be accessible through firewalls for clients to access the NetSight Server Administration web pages, NetSight OneView, and NAC Dashboard.
  • Port 8444 (Default HTTPS traffic) must be accessible through firewalls for clients to access the NAC Appliance Administration web pages.
  • The following ports must be accessible through firewalls for the NetSight Server and a NAC appliance to communicate:
  • Required Ports (all bi-directionally)
    TCP: 4530-4533, 4589, 8080, 8443, 8444
    UDP: 161, 162
Common Java Issues
  1. Clear the Java cache on the end system starting the NetSight client. This can be done from Control Panel -> Java -> General tab -> Settings button -> Delete Files. Select all option and delete.
  2. Check to make sure that the Keep Temporary Files on my computer is checked in Java. This is found in the Java Control Panel -> General Tab -> Settings button. If that is not checked then the client software will be download each time they launch.
  3. Try changing the Network settings for Java: Control Panel -> Java -> General tab -> Networking tab. Try selecting Direct connection.
  4. Add the IP of the NetSight server to the security site list in Java:  Control Panel -> Java -> Security.  Make an entry for: http://<Server_IP>:8080
Clear local NetSight files and re-download application
  1. Rename the NetSight client directory on the end system to NetSightold. For Windows vista/7 it would be located at:C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\NetSight
  2. Connect to the NetSight launch page and try launching NetSight Console.
NetSight server not binding to IP stack correctly

/<Install Directory>/NetSight/appdata/logs/server.log has the following error message, or similar:

This is caused by the system missing an entry to resolve itself in the /etc/hosts file, resolution is to add this entry

On servers with multiple network interfaces the NetSight server services could bind to the incorrect interface. If the server.log shows that the NetSight bound to an interface, but is not the correct one, or did not bind at all manually assign the IP to use.

  1. Change directory to /var/Extreme_Networks/netsight
    cd /var/Extreme_networks
  2. Edit the .netsight file
    vi .netsight
  3. Press "i" to enter edit mode, use the arrow keys to navigate and edit the file so that JBOSS_HOSTNAME=<IP_of_ interface>
  4. Press "Esc" key, followed by "Shift + ;" then the string "wq", then press "Enter" to save and exit the vi editor.
  5. Restart the NetSight services
    service nsserver restart
  1. Open the file and edit the .netsight file so that JBOSS_HOSTNAME=<IP_of_Netsight>. The .netsight file to be modified will be in the C:\ProgramData\Extreme Networks\ directory. Note:  On windows this is normally a hidden directory.  You will want 'Show hidden files, folders and drives' in Windows Explorer by clicking Organize > Folder and Search Options > View.
  2. Save the file and restart the NetSight server services.

NetSight Java error:
The User Connection Service in unavailable. You may need to restart your NetSight Server
Resolution: Remove the local C:/users/<user>/AppData/roaming/NetSight direction and delete the Java temporary files.

Server.log shows the following error message:
2015-03-23 10:25:35,223 ERROR [STDERR] Mar 23, 2015 10:25:35 AM net.sf.ehcache.Cache <clinit>
SEVERE: Unable to set localhost. This prevents creation of a GUID. Cause was: Name or service not known Name or service not known
DNS hostnames are not aligned throughout the NetSight server. To fix this verify the /etc/hosts file has the same hostname configured as the /etc/sysconfig/network file.

NetSight server port in use by another application

NetSight server.log shows:
ObjectName: jboss:service=WebService
Reason: java.lang.Exception: Port 8083 already in use.
Depends On Me:
The server requires use of port 8083 for normal operation. Determine which application is currently using port 8083 and remove that application, or change the connection port used on the NetSight:to an open port
  1. Edit the following file: <Installdirectory>/NetSight/jboss/server/default/conf/jboss-service.xml
  2. Search for "8083" and replace with desired open port.
  3. Restart NetSight Services
    service nsserver restart
