« Go Back

Information

TitleContinous Syslog message from Netsight: init ttyS0 main process ended, respawning
Symptoms
See this message appearing in EMC syslog feed.
Environment
  • EMC
  • syslog
Cause
It appears to be related to a operating system trying to open a console port on a virtual system.  This does not exist so it continues to trying (re-spawn).
The ttyS0 refers to the serial port, which on a VM is usually not present/connected, and this message will appear.
Resolution
  • Make a backup copy of the the file /etc/init/ttyS0.conf file to keep the original
  • A restart of syslog or reboot of the system may be required.
This procedure should resolve the issue, which would be entered on the NMS server:
mv /etc/init/ttyS0.conf /etc/init/ttyS0.conf.BACKUP
then you can reboot the OS via the 'reboot' command which, when renaming the file, should not start ttyS0 on restart.
