Information

TitleHow to disable SNMP on the S and N-Series
Symptoms
  • How to disable SNMP on the N-Series
  • How to disable SNMP on the S-Series
Environment
  • Matrix N-Series
  • S-Series
  • DFE
Cause
  • By default, the N and S series supports SNMPv1 (5245) and SNMPv2 (an enhanced version of SNMPv1, and similarly configured, but not as secure as SNMPv3). The default SNMP commands are:
set snmp access groupRW security-model v1 exact read All write All notify All
set snmp access groupRW security-model v2c exact read All write All notify All
set snmp community public
set snmp group groupRW user public security-model v1
set snmp group groupRW user public security-model v2c
set snmp view viewname All subtree 1
set snmp view viewname All subtree 0.0

  • Predefined are SNMPv1 community name 'public'; and SNMPv1/v2 user 'public', in group 'groupRW', with view 'All'.
Resolution
  • To remove all of these default commands:
clear snmp access groupRW security-model v1
clear snmp access groupRW security-model v2c
clear snmp community public
clear snmp group groupRW public
clear snmp view All 1
clear snmp view All 0.0

  • The simplest way to temporarily disable both SNMPv1 and SNMPv2 is to remove the community name:
clear snmp community public

  • The simplest way to temporarily disable just SNMPv1 is to remove the SNMPv1 group:
clear snmp group groupRW public security-model v1

  • The simplest way to temporarily disable just SNMPv2 is to remove the SNMPv2 group:
clear snmp group groupRW public security-model v2c

  • Any of these "temporary" disablements may be reversed by re-entering the original 'set' command corresponding to the disabling 'clear' command used.
