Symptoms
  • IdentiFi Wireless APs do not have either primary or backup data tunnels
  • Uptime is not displaying in AP Availability report
  • AP's radios will not turn on
  • SSIDs are not being broadcast
  • Users will fail to authenticate when the packet sizes are large (Certificate Exchange)
  • Access Points will not load a firmware file across the WAN 
Environment
  • ExtremeWireless
  • All Access Point Models 
  • Firmware Any
Cause
  • Overhead encapsulation used in VPN connections causes fragmentation of WASSP tunneling packets
  • The access point is not setting it's MTU size via MTU  Path Discovery
  • Same is true for any encapsulated protocol (MPLS, Metro-E, Etc.)
Resolution
  • Confirm why MTU Path Discovery is not working on the network. This is usually because firewalls are not allowing PMTU discovery
  • Statically Setting MTU on the access point:
  1. Let's find out what the MTU size is you need to statically set
  2. Ping from a DOS prompt on the local side to the AP on the remote side - ping -l 1400 -f 
  3. Continue to ping with various sizes until you find what the maximum MTU size is
  4. Click AP tab > APs dropdown list > select the AP in question
  5. Click Static Configuration tab
  6. Change Tunnel MTU setting from value found in your ping test. Example: 1500 to 1400
  7. Click Save
