NAC appliance running out of memory

« Go Back

Information

TitleNAC appliance running out of memory
Symptoms
  • NAC stops processing new authentication requests.
  • Memory errors seen in tag.log:  java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space
Environment
NAC appliance versions 8.0.1 - 8.0.2
Cause
Memory setting needs to be changed from 2GB to 4GB.

To verify run the following command:

ps auwwx | grep java;cat /proc/meminfo

Looks for a line similar to:   /usr/bin/java -server -Dwatchdog.name=tag -Xms128m -Xmx2048m -XX:+HeapDumpOnOutOfMemoryError

The -Xmx value indicates memory assigned.  Xmx2048m is 2GB
Resolution
Upgrade the NAC appliance to 8.0.3.x

If that is not possible then make the following change on the NAC Appliance:

1.  Edit the file /etc/init.d/nac
2.  Check that line 48 contains an entry for MAX_MEMORY=
3.  Make sure that this is set to 4096.
4.  Save the file.
5.  Restart the NAC appliance.
