Ping or Traceroute not working if the source Interface option is specified

« Go Back

Information

TitlePing or Traceroute not working if the source Interface option is specified
Symptoms
Unable to ping or traceroute when specifying source interface.  When attempted messages similar to these are seen
  • ping: Could not send echo request
  • traceroute: sendto: No route to host
Environment
  • S-Series
  • K-Series
  • 7100
  • Firmware 8.31.03.0001
Cause
The -I option specifies which interfaces the first hop of the ping or traceroute should traverse.  This option does not specify that the ping packet should be sourced form that interface.  The error listed above is seen when trying to ping a remote host that does not have a valid routed path when the ping or traceroute egresses the specified interface by the -I option.
Resolution

The -S option will specify a source IP address to be used and is suggested when trying to have a ping or traceroute sourced from a specific point.  In version 8.62.01 and later firmware the "?" definition of the -I option has been updated to more accurately reflect its behavior.
