Information

TitleRate-limit flood counters (BUM) are all increased at the same time no matter what the incoming traffic is
Symptoms
Rate-limit flood counters (BUM) are all increased at the same time no matter what the incoming traffic is, like in the example below

X460G2-48x-10G4.24 # show port 4 rate flood out-of-profile
Port Flood Type Status Counter
-------- ---------------- -------------- ----------
4 Unknown Dest MAC Out of profile 1444127
4 Multicast Out of profile 1444127
4 Broadcast Out of profile 1444127
================================================================================
          > indicates Port Display Name truncated past 8 characters

Environment
  • EXOS all
  • BUM - Broadcast, Unknown Destination Unicast  and Multicast
  • X440G2
  • X450G2
  • X460G2
  • X670G2
  • X870
Cause
This is hardware limitation.
Resolution
Expected behaviour due to hardware limitation. Only one register is available to count  all  the three types (multicast , broadcast and unknown unicast) of rate-limit dropped  packets which crossed the threshold.
The hardware cannot distinguish what kind of packet gets counted by this register .The counter values showed in <show ports rate-limit flood out-of-profile> is also taken from that register.
Any way other packets types  will not drop until that particular type of packets cross the threshold.
