Symptoms
This procedure replaces a faulty node/switch in the VDX fabric running Logical Chassis mode.

Consider the following VDX fabric of 4 switches in which Rbridge-Id 2 is faulty and needs to be replaced:

Cause
Resolution
Step 1. Prepare the newreplacement switch
  • Make sure the new switch is running the same firmware version as fabric. If not, upgrade the switch to the required firmware version.
  • The new switch to be replaced should be of the same type with identical capabilities.
  • Configure the same VCS ID , Rbridge-id and Logical Chassis mode on the new switch
sw0# vcs vcsid 10 rbridge-id 2 logical-chassis enable
  • The above command will default the configuration and reboot the switch.
  • Once the switch is back up, entershow vcs and make note of the WWN ID of the new switch

Step 2 . Physically disconnect the faulty switch from the fabric
  • Disconnect all the connections/links from the faulty switch in the fabric and keep a note of interface connections.
  • The fabric status should now show Rbridge 2 as offline (takes about a minute to reflect the status)

Step 3. Start Replacement Procedure
  • Issue the following command on principal switch of the fabric to replace Rbridge-ID 2:
VDX1-6720# vcs replace rbridge-id 2
  • The fabric will prompt for the WWN ID of the new switch:
Enter the WWN of the new replacement switch:10:00:00:05:33:7D:76:B0 <----WWN of the new switch
This operation will remove and replace the switch from the fabric. Do you want to continue? [Y/N] y
  • Show VCS should now show the Rbridge-ID 2 status as "Replacing":

Step 4. Connect the new switch in the fabric
  • Make the physical connections on the appropriate ISL interfaces on the new switch to bring up the ISL interfaces on the new switch
  • Once the ISL interfaces physically come up, run 'show vcs' to check the new rbridge-id 2 status changed from "Rejoining" to "Online":
  • Connect all other data cables and bring up the non-ISL ports as necessary
