Self Registration PPSK SSID in Hivemanager

« Go Back

Information

TitleSelf Registration PPSK SSID in Hivemanager
Symptoms
Objectives:
  • Create a Cloud-PPSK User Group W/ Enable CWP Register Checked
  • Create a PPSK-SSID for normal Authentication.
  • Create an Open-SSID with Captive Web Portal
  • Push Configuration Update to all Network-Policy Devices

End-User Experience:
  •     WiFi-End-Users will first connect to the Open SSID, which will direct them to a Captive Web Portal (CWP).
  •     WiFi-End-Users register via this CWP, and then receive Credentials for the PPSK-SSID.
  •     WiFi-End-Users connect to the PPSK-SSID, enter the received Credentials, and gain access as configured.
Environment
Self Registration allows end users to enter the network, submit required information, and be provided with newly generated credentials. This allows end users to create their own PPSK credentials, using rules and restrictions set up ahead of time, without requiring an administrator or guest manager to manually create these user credentials. This is a convenient way to control network access without using Radius or pre-generated credentials.

This guide examines how to set up Self-Registration using Cloud PPSK Users in an enterprise Wi-Fi environment.
Cause
Resolution
Step 1: Creating the Cloud-PPSK User Group W/ Enable CWP Register Checked

Navigation: Configure Tab -> Users -> User Groups

  1. Click ADD Button
  2. Name the User Group
  3. Confirm Password DB Location is CLOUD *see notes below
  4. Confirm Password Type is PPSK
  5. Confirm Enable CWP Register is Checked
  6. All other Settings are to the Administrator's preference (ie. Password, Expiration, Delivery, Users)

Note: Aerohive provides a choice of two types of PPSK (Private Pre-Shared Key) users: cloud PPSK users and local PPSK users. The key difference between the two types is where they are stored. Cloud PPSK users are stored in Aerohive hosted servers within the HiveManager cloud platform or for an on-premises solution—within the HiveManager virtual appliance. Local PPSK users are stored locally on Aerohive APs.

Step 2: Create the PPSK-SSID and assign the new User Group

Navigation: Configure Tab -> Network Policies List -> Specific Network Policy -> Wireless Networks
  1. Click ADD Button -> Click All Other Networks (Standard)
  2. Name the SSID (Broadcast Name Auto-Fills)
  3. Confirm Private Pre-Shared Key is SSID Authentication Method
  4. Under User Groups use the Select option to select the User Group created in Step 1.
  5. The User Group created in Step 1 will be in the Cloud Tab.
  6. Save the SSID

Step 3: Creating the Open-SSID with Captive Web Portal

Navigation: Configure Tab -> Network Policies List -> Specific Network Policy -> Wireless Networks

  1. Click ADD Button -> Click All Other Networks (Standard)
  2. Name the SSID (Broadcast Name Auto-Fills)
  3. Confirm Open Unsecured is SSID Authentication Method
  4. Toggle Switch for Enable Captive Web Portal
  5. Check Enable Self-Registration & Return Aerohive Private PSK
    • Note once these options are selected, the user profile for the Open SSID will disappear. This SSID is only for registration and not for client connectivity, so the user profile wouldn't apply to anyone connected to this SSID.
    • The VLAN used for registration will be the VLAN set on the default user profile of the PPSK SSID created earlier that will be tied to this SSID.
  6. Un-Check Enable UPA
  7. Click Default Captive Web Portal ADD Button
  8. Name the Captive Web Portal
  9. Select the PPSK-SSID in the Choose Access SSID Drop-Down
  10. Select Cloud PPSK Registration Server in the Choose a PPSK Server Drop-Down
  11. Save CWP
  12. Save SSID

Step 4: Pushing a Configuration Update to Network Policy Devices.

Navigation: Configure Tab -> Network Policies List -> Specific Network Policy -> Deploy Policy

  1. Select all Devices listed in Network Policy
  2. Press Upload Button
  3. Click Perform Update button

End Result:
  • WiFi-End-Users first connect Client-Device to the OPEN-SSID and register via Captive Web portal.
  • WiFi-End-Users receive Credentials via Email/SMS after Registration.
  • WiFi-End-Users connect to PPSK-SSID with received credentials.
