Symptoms
  • Slow Ping Responses
  • Switch may lose connection to upstream switch at seemingly random intervals
  • Reboot resolves issue for a time, but it returns
  • High amount of Pause Frames
  • Loss of SNMP
  • STP Topology changes
  • VRRP- drop packets results VRRP does not form. Master and backup transitions
  • Increased Retransmissions, Arp's, Broadcast and Multicast traffic
Environment
  • SecureStack
  • S-Series
  • K-Series
  • N-Series
  • All Firmware
Cause
  • High amount of Pause Frames on Uplink Ports rx
  • High amount of Pause Frames on Uplink Ports tx
  • High amount of Pause Frames received from a PC, phone, AP that can reside on the local switch or from a neighboring switch
  • Faulty or mis-configured NIC Drivers, Duplex port speed duplex,configurations, or even faulty wiring
Resolution
Options:
Please note that if you run any of the following commands on a port(user or up link) there will be a short link loss. The command change on an up link port would cause a topology change, thus affecting all users in the network. Please consider making the changes after hours.

 
  • To show a ports pause frame counts
  • (su)->show port flowcontrol ge.1.1

  • To show all ports pause frame counts
  • (su)->show port flowcontrol
    

SecureStack:
  • Disable flowcontrol globally on the switch
  • (su)->set flowcontrol disable
  • Clear port advertise pause 
  • (su)->clear port advertise ge.1.1 pause
  • Check what is connected to a port with high pause frames received
S-series
  • Set port flowcontrol both ge.x.y disable 
  • (su)->set port flowcontrol ge.1.1 both disable
  • Clear port advertise pause
  • (su)->clear port advertise ge.1.1 pause
  • Check what is connected to a port with high pause frames received
