TitleUnable to configure sfp breakout on 27x40GbE module
Symptoms
  • Unable to configure sfp breakout on 27x40GbE module
  • Error message is seen after setting the hardware port-group ID to performance mode
    VDX8770# show running-config hardware port-group
    hardware
    port-group 1/5/7
    mode performance
    !
    !
    VDX8770# conf t
    Entering configuration mode terminal
    VDX8770(config)# hardware
    VDX8770(config-hardware)# connector 1/5/7
%%Error: Connector configuration is not supported on port 1/5/7. Port-group in density mode.
Environment
  • VDX 8770-4 or VDX 8770-8
  • Network OS
  • 27x40GbE Linecard Module
Cause
This issue was caused by configuring the incorrect port-group ID.

The 27x40GbE line card only supports nine port groups of three ports each that you can configure for Performance or Density operating modes. The table below shows the groupings per Port Group ID

27x40 GbE line card port groups

Resolution
  1. Configure port-group Performance mode
    sw0# configure terminal
    Entering configuration mode terminal
    sw0(config)# hardware
    sw0(config-hardware)# port-group 1/5/3 // */*/3 represents Port Group ID 3 which is ports 7-9.
    sw0(config-port-group-1/5/3)# mode performance
    sw0(config-port-group-1/5/3)# end
sw0# copy running-config startup-config //Only applies if the VCS mode is Fabric cluster
  2.  Power-off and on the linecard
    sw0#power-off linecard 5
    Linecard 5 is being powered-off
    sw0#power-on linecard 5
    Linecard 5 is being powered-on
  3.  Ensure it boots back into enabled
    sw0# sh slot
    Rbridge-id 1:

    Slot  Type         Description                 ID      Status
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------
M1   MM           Management Module           112     ENABLED

S1   SFM          Switch Fabric Module        113     ENABLED
S2   SFM          Switch Fabric Module        113     ENABLED
     S3   SFM          Switch Fabric Module        113     ENABLED#

     L1   LC48X10GT    48-port 10GE Base-T card    151     ENABLED
     L2   LC48X10GT    48-port 10GE Base-T card    151     ENABLED
     L3                                                    VACANT
     L4   LC27X40G     27-port 40GE card           150     ENABLED
     L5   LC27X40G     27-port 40GE card           150     ENABLED
     L6                                                    VACANT
     L7                                                    VACANT
     L8   LC48X10GT    48-port 10GE Base-T card    151     ENABLED
     # = At least one enabled SFM in these slots is required.
  4. Configure the ports under the Port Group ID configured(ref: step 1)
    •        Ports must be administratively shut before configuring the sfp breakout
    sw0# configure terminal
    Entering configuration mode terminal
    sw0(config)# interface FortyGigabitEthernet 1/5/7
    sw0(conf-if-fo-1/5/7)# shutdown
    sw0(conf-if-fo-1/5/7)# FortyGigabitEthernet 1/5/8
    sw0(conf-if-fo-1/5/8)# shutdown
    sw0(conf-if-fo-1/5/8)#exit
    sw0(config)# hardware
    sw0(config-hardware)# connector 1/5/7
    sw0(config-connector-1/5/7)# sfp breakout
    sw0(config-connector-1/5/7)#exit
    sw0(config-hardware)# connector 1/5/8
    sw0(config-connector-1/5/8)# sfp breakout
    sw0(config-connector-1/5/8)#exit
  5. Repeat step 2 above
  6. Enable the newly configured ports(range command supported)
    sw0# configure terminal
    Entering configuration mode terminal
    sw0(config)#interface te 1/5/7:1-4
    sw0(conf-if-te-1/5/7:1-4)#no shutdown
    sw0(conf-if-te-1/5/7:1-4)#int te 1/5/8:1-4
    sw0(conf-if-te-1/5/8:1-4)#no shutdown
    sw0(conf-if-te-1/5/8:1-4)#end
    sw0#
Additional notes
NOTE:  When the port group is in Performance mode, you can only configure the first two ports in the port group in breakout mode, since the third port in the group is disabled. Hence, trunking is only supported on the first two ports in the port group.

Additional information on configuring SFP breakout can be found in the Brocade VDX 8770-8 Hardware Installation Guide.
