Information

TitleUnable to set power higher than 13db on 5Ghz Radios
Symptoms
  • Unable to set 5Ghz frequencies between 36 to 64  higher than (13dbm max)
  • Degraded wireless performance across the locations served by the controller.
  • Using 'Auto channel', unable to adjust the power setting to the full legal capability of the Access Point.
  • All 5GHz radios on  Access Points forced down to a maximum of 13 db power, both the setting and actual operation.
Environment
  • Identifi Wireless
  • Extreme Wireless
  • All AP's
  • All Firmware versions 9.X and higher
Cause
In Auto mode, an Access Point can at any time select a different channel from among those specified within the defined Channel Plan. The stated symptoms may be seen when the Channel Plan includes channels from different Band and maximum power levels (Band 1 channels have a max of 13 dBm but Bands 2-4 have a max within the range of 17 to 21 dBm).

Prior to the 9.x release, Auto mode maintains the maximum transmit power supported by the selected channel within the Channel Plan, with the disadvantage that the transmit power level could fluctuate over time as channels change.
As of the 9.x release, Auto mode maintains the maximum transmit power supported by the lowest-power channel within the Channel Plan, with the disadvantage that the AP may not always transmit to maximum capability as channels change.
Resolution
1. Login to the Controller
2. Select Main Menu AP Tab
3. Check individual AP or multiple AP's that will be configured
4. Go to Actions drop down
5. Select Multi Edit
6. Go to Balanced Channel List Power
7. Select Disable in the drop down
8. Click the Apply button

What is the Balanced Channel List Power setting on the IdentiFi access point used for?

The check box named "Balanced Channel List Power": when enabled power is min value over the channel list (13db) , when disabled it is max tx power over the channel list. Check box exist on the Single AP, Multi AP configuration, default AP configuration (Enabled)

On upgrade from pre V9.x, checkbox for "Balanced Channel List Power" is disabled.
On upgrade from V9.x that has NO "Balanced Channel List Power", checkbox for min(power-channel-plan) is enabled.
On upgrade from V9.x that has "Balanced Channel List Power", checkbox preserves the value on the upgrade.

Additional notes
Note: Raw tx power does not translate directly into better coverage, and usually means more interference instead. Uniformity of the power across the Channel Plan is advantageous because it provides predictability of the installation, reduces the problem of "sticky" clients, and promotes high density deployment by enforcing high data rates.

Wireless Sight Surveys are recommended for new installations or if one has not been done.
