Information

TitleConsole Connection to Securestack Not Working With Cisco Console Cable
Symptoms
No response from console
Environment
  • Securestack - all models
  • Cisco Console Adapter Cable
  • Laptop with DB9M COM port or USB-DB9F adapter
Cause
Cisco Console Adapter Cable uses a pinout that is proprietary to Cisco and will not work on this switch
Resolution
Pinout of the DB9M port on the switch:

Pin 2, Received Data (input)
Pin 3, Transmitted Data (output)
Pin 5, Signal Ground
All other pins not connected.

The appropriate cable is shipped with the switch.  If this is not available an industry standard NULL MODEM cable can be used.

Standard NULL MODEM cable pinout:
DB9F-1    DB9F-2
1           1
2           3
3           2
4           4
5           5
7           8
8           7
9           9

The key is pins 2 and 3 must be crossed.  Pin 2 is RCD while Pin 3 is TXD.  TXD must be connected to RCD on the other end for the PC and the switch to communicate.
