« Go Back

Information

TitleWindows 7 clients failing 802.1x with "Authentication Request became stale" error message
Symptoms
  • NAC Show's "Authentication Request became Stale"
  • Trace indicates host stop responding to EAP packets
Environment
  • Extreme Control/NAC
  • Windows 7/Server 2008 R2
  • 802.1x
Cause
The DOT3SVC service updates the AutoConfig value with the session handle ID when DOT3SVC authentication succeeds. Additionally, the session handle ID increases by 1. All authentication failure events and reauthentication events that come from the miniport or from the network do not match the session ID. Therefore, these events are dropped.

Resolution
See Microsoft KB for hotfix information:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/980295
