Information

TitleClient authentication issue - showing in NAC End-Systems with Reason "Rule: "802.1X Placeholder" Reverse Lookup Zone is not configured for subnet in DNS Server
Symptoms
  • Wireless client authentication issue - showing in NAC End-Systems with Reason "Rule: "802.1X Placeholder"
  • User is able to authenticate with 802.1x, but not 802.1x for a specific group of users in a domain.
Environment
  • IdentiFi Wireless
  • NAC Controller
  • 802.1X RADIUS authentication
  • Active Directory
  • DNS
  • Reverse Lookup Zone
Cause
A client can get stuck at "802.1X Placeholder if Reverse DNS from NAC for the client(s) is not working
Resolution
     1. SSH to NAC appliance and issue "nslookup <CLIENT_IP>" to verify if reverse DNS is resolving or not
     2. If DNS server is incorrect, reconfigure DNS Server IP address(es) by going through config setup with command nacconfig
     3. If DNS Server is correct, but DNS is still not resolving, look into possible DNS server issue or try to resolve client IP directly on the DNS Server

Here is a sample screenshot of configuration of DNS on a server. We do not support direct configuration of third party DNS servers. This is an example only.
