TitleX440 FAN does not work, node will shutdown in overheat condition
Symptoms
X440 FAN does not work, the switch will report an OVERHEAT condition.
If in stack configuration, the affected node will shutdown in overheat condition
.
Environment
  • Summit X440-24t
  • Summit X440-24t-10G
  • Summit X440-L2-24t
  • Summit X440-24dc
Cause
Switch operates on two sensors – one to trigger fans and one to alarm s/w. Under certain environmental conditions, these can get out of sync resulting in thermal alarms and/or shut down before fans operate

Fans will run only when switch temperature readings exceeds 48C
  • Fans will start spinning when temperature sensor (0) reaches 48 degrees (as measured on sensor (0))
  • Expected outcome: fans will run when the temp reaches 48 degrees and bring the temperature down
Max hotspot temperature is set to 65 degrees.  Exceeding that value, the switch will report an OVERHEAT condition.
  • Example error state condition (debug output from the switch):
Slot-1 Stack.55 > !cat /proc/extr/temp
Number of temperature sensors=2
Sensor 0) Module=Motherboard(2), type=default(1), 44.50
Sensor 1) Module=Motherboard(2), type=Hotspot(3), 72.00
  • Fans will not spin up and stack node will shut-down with Overheat condition.

Resolution
Workaround
  • Place external fan in neighborhood of stack to keep temperature below 65 degrees on sensor
  • Try to gather as much air flow info as possible – how switch is mounted physically, air flow near switch due to construction or other equipment, room ambient, etc
Permanent Fix:
  • EXOS 15.5.3.4-patch1-2. This version has the fix for the temperature overheat condition on the stacked Summit X440.

Additional notes
Fan status LED is ON when fans are considered operational, regardless of whether the fans are spinning (i.e. ON or OFF)
